Put A Plant On It! Where To Find Plants In New York

colleen jordanComment

With the holidays right around the corner, we're sharing with you some of our favorite places to pick up plants, and where we find the small ones that you see us use in our planters. We spend a good amount of time in New York City*, and we'd like to share our recommendations for where to find them with you!

New York Flower Market
On 28th Street between 6th and 7th avenue in Midtown Manhattan
Contrary to how it sounds, the New York Flower Market is not one store, but a block in Midtown Manhattan that is home to several flower and plant stores. We've covered visiting the Flower Market before, and its still one of our favorite places in the city to pick up plants and flowers when we visit. Several stores also carry other items you might need for floral arrangements, like vases, ribbons, floral foam, and wires. Some stores accept only business customers, so make sure to ask before you fall in love with any possible purchases.

Chelsea Garden Center
87 Havemeyer St., Brooklyn, NY
Chelsea Garden Center has moved since we last visited, but they have a great selection of succulents, seeds, and plants for landscaping.

The Gift Shop at Brooklyn Botanical Garden
Here's an amazing secret you may not know: many botanical gardens sell houseplants, tropical plants, and seeds and bulbs with gifts. On our last visit to the Gardens, we were able to pick up some tillandsia and seeds. If you're visiting the garden, stop by and pick up some plants as well!

*As a note, this list is not comprehensive of all of the places to find plants in and around New York, but these are the businesses that we know and recommend. If you have another business to recommend for this list, please let us know! Also, large chain stores are not included in this list, but will be included in a later post.

DIY Friday: 3D Print Some Succulent Planters

DIY, Just for Funcolleen jordanComment

If you're looking for an activity or DIY project  to make over the long weekend, we've been working on some small desk planters that you can 3D print at home! The planters measure 3" wide and deep by 3" tall, and they're perfect for holding small plants on your windowsill, or also useful as small desk organizers. Print out a few, and you can have a small botanical garden on your desk!

You can find the files for free to download on Thingiverse. If you don't have access to a 3D printer, you may be able to access one at your local library, find a local printer at 3Dhubs.com, or use a printing service such as Shapeways.com.

With the holidays right around the corner, we thought this would be a good time to share with you some of our favorite places to pick up plants, and where we find the small ones that you see us use in our planters. Since we're based in Atlanta*, we're most familiar with the places to find plants locally, and we'd like to share our recommendations with you!

Southeast Succulents
at The Collective, 723 Lake Avenue Northeast, Atlanta, GA, 30307
at Whole Foods on Ponce, 650 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30308

One of our favorite places to pick up the succulents that you see us use for our photos is Southeast Succulents! They sell their succulents at a few places around Atlanta, mainly the Collective in Inman Park and at Whole Foods Markets. In addition to plants, they also sell potting soils for succulents, and other decorative terrarium supplies.

Gardenhood
353 Boulevard SE, Atlanta, GA 30312
Gardenhood is a nursery that sells a variety of plants in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta. We like to buy succulents there, and they sell a selection of indoor and outdoor varieties. In addition to succulents, you can also find potting soils, garden decorations, and plants for landscaping at this nursery.

Hall's Atlanta Wholesale Florist
630 Angier Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30308
Hall's is mainly a wholesale florist, but they also sell plants such as succulents (our favorite plants to use for our planters) and house plants. In addition to plants, they also sell other floral items that you might need for floral arrangements or decorating events. If you're shopping for flowers for a wedding or event, stop by here to pick up your flowers and the other vases and accessories you might need!

Pike Nurseries
Several locations in the Atlanta Area
Pike Nurseries is an Atlanta based chain of nurseries. While most people know them for their large selection of landscaping plants, they also carry a large variety of succulents and tillandsia (air plants).

If you have any nursery recomendations here or in other cities, please let us know and we'd love to share them!

*As a note, this list is not comprehensive of all of the places to find plants in and around Atlanta, but these are the businesses that we know and recommend. If you have another business to recommend for this list, please let us know! Also, large chain stores are not included in this list, only small and Atlanta based businesses. Visiting Meadowburn Farm

Just for Funcolleen jordanComment

Tucked away in Northern New Jersey, about an hour from New York City, is the Historic Meadowburn Farm. We were lucky enough to get to visit and tour the gardens and farms last month at the end of summer and right at the peak of dahlia season.

Meadowburn Farm was founded in the 1750s on the border between New York and New Jersey and was a homestead for many years. It was later broken into parcels, one of which became the farm that exists today. The farm was later the country home of Helena Rutherfurd Ely, a New York socialite and an influential garden writer.

Today the farm is a historic garden open for tours and still ha a working dairy. Most of the garden still follows Helena Rutherfurd Ely's original design and is in the process of being restored to its former glory. The garden is broken into a series of smaller gardens as it was in the past, and many of the original fountains, stonework, and wooden fences still stand. The garden is beautiful not only for its rows and rows of lovely flower and plants, but for its peak into its past.

Not only did we get to tour the spectacular gardens, but we made a trip to their dairy as well, and took home some of the farm's homemade cheddar. The farm is also a protected historic farm and home to some very happy to Jersey cows.

Everything's Coming up Dahlias: Flowers we love right now!

Dahlias for sale at the New York Flower Market.

It seems like everywhere we look right now we're seeing our new favorite flower, the dahlia! From the farmer's market, to our trip to Meadowburn farm, and even the New York Flower Market, dahlias are really having their moment right now! If you're planning a wedding, looking to add some flora to your bike, or just looking for some flowers for your desk, these colorful blooms are a great choice right now!

If you've noticed in some of our recent photos, we've been incorporating these lovely blooms into as many photos as possible! Our love affair with this flower started this summer, so we've really taken as many opportunities to share them as possible. The dahlia is in the same family of flowers as others we love like the zinnia, so they've been right at home with the other flowers we usually show off.

Dahlias are a beautiful flower to grow and can grow to be close to six feet tall. If you're lucky enough to have a garden, dahlia seeds and bulbs are available for you  to plant. On our recent trip to Meadowburn farm, we learned all about their heirloom varietals of dahlia and that they sell the bulbs, too! They can be tricky to keep as a cut flower though, so if you bring them inside, make sure to keep them hydrated with flower food and out of direct light.

Dahlias are in season from summer until early fall, so If  you'd like show off some of these colorful blooms, you're still in luck! They're still in season, and you can find them now at your local farmer's market (if you're in North America) or your local florist.

Happy planting!
